What Is Falling Mass Impact Testing?

Falling Mass Impact Testing—also known as Drop Weight Testing—is a non-destructive mechanical test designed to simulate accidental external impacts on plastic pipes and profiles. The goal is to determine how resistant the material is to breakage when struck by a falling object.

The test involves:

  • Dropping a standardized weight (hammer)from a fixed height.
  • Observing the sample for cracks, fractures, or deformation.
  • Repeating the test on multiple samples for statistical accuracy.

It’s commonly applied to pipes made from:

  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
  • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
  • PP (Polypropylene)
  • ABS and composite materials
